When her eight-year-old asked if he could be more knowledgeable than her, Jane realized knowledge was no longer the family's currency. Our children will know more than we do. That is inevitable. But they will not automatically learn to own the weight of a choice — to navigate the agonizing space between competing goods, to weigh loyalty against truth, justice against mercy, efficiency against dignity. That is what we must teach them. Not by giving them answers, but by walking with them through the tension.

My eight-year-old son asked me this the other day.
My first instinct was to smile and say, "Not yet, kiddo." I did a quick mental scan of his "knowledge reserve" — primary school math, basic geography, cartoon lore — and felt confident in my answer.
But then I paused.
I thought about the hours he spends in Minecraft. I thought about his recent fascination with nature — the specific names of stones, the life cycles of insects, the habits of amphibians. He has built a wealth of knowledge on these topics through conversations with Large Language Models that I am completely ignorant about.
Thirty years ago, his question would have been almost nonsensical. Parents were the unquestioned authorities, the walking encyclopedias, the gatekeepers of facts.
Today, it's entirely plausible. And that changes everything.
This conversation isn't really about Minecraft. It's about epistemic authority — the unspoken assumption that parents naturally know more than their children.
For thousands of years, this assumption held. Parents knew more about farming, cooking, survival, mathematics, history, language, and practical life. Children learned primarily from adults because adults possessed information that children didn't.
That assumption is quietly disappearing.
An eight-year-old can now spend hundreds of hours exploring prehistoric creatures, astronomy, marine biology, mythology, or game mechanics, guided by an AI that patiently answers every question without tiring. Parents may have no idea how deep that knowledge has become. And here we arrive at the hardest question of all:
If parents are no longer the children's encyclopedia, what becomes our most important role?
The 'knowledge' my son has accumulated about Minecraft redstone or amphibian life cycles may not seem immediately valuable in the traditional economy. But perhaps we're judging it through an Industrial Age lens.
Knowledge has never really been the end goal. Knowledge is the material from which children build mental models. Whether the building blocks are dinosaurs, Roman history, Pokémon, fungi, or space telescopes — they are all helping a child construct their temple of understanding. Every new idea connects with another. Patterns emerge. Questions become more sophisticated. Interests evolve.
The content matters less than the architecture being built. AI can give you every fact about wolves. But only a human can decide whether to follow that thread into ecosystems, mythology, fear, conservation, or genetic engineering. Each path creates a different understanding of the world.
And yet, as I sat with my son's question, I realized:
The real question is not how much he knows, but whether he is learning to choose what matters.
Because soon, he won't need me for facts. He will need me for something far harder: the agonizing, beautiful, deeply human work of choosing between competing goods when neither option is clearly superior, and both carry a cost.
That is not a question of knowledge. That is a question of judgment.
Here is the most important distinction I have come to understand.

Judgment usually distinguishes right from right.
Consider the dilemmas that actually shape a human life:
There isn't a correct answer to any of these. There is only a human answer.
AI can present arguments for both sides. It can simulate sympathy, weigh probabilities, and even recommend a course of action based on aggregated human data. But AI has never felt the sharp ache of loneliness at midnight. It has never known the suffocating weight of grief. It has never lain awake, staring at the ceiling, acutely aware that time is running out and a decision must be made.
It has never experienced time pressure the way we do — not computational latency, but the existential squeeze of a finite life.
And because it cannot suffer, it cannot truly understand suffering in others. It can simulate empathy, but it cannot share vulnerability. It cannot build trust through mutual fragility. It cannot compromise because it has nothing to lose. It cannot make genuine human connections because it has no self to expose.
Our fragility and our mortality are not weaknesses. They are the very things that allow us to understand one another, build trust, make sacrifices, and assign meaning.
AI operates on logic and probability. Humans operate on love, fear, hope, and regret — and we must navigate these forces when choosing between competing goods.
That is judgment.
And that is why it is our last unfair advantage.
When I realized that there were already corners of the world my son understood far better than I did, that wasn't what unsettled me.
What unsettled me was realizing I no longer knew exactly what he knew, how he had come to know it, or which ideas were quietly shaping the way he saw the world.
Because AI doesn't merely answer questions. It quietly shapes the sequence in which ideas arrive. It chooses which connections to highlight. It decides which paths to offer.
Without active guidance, my son's knowledge could grow in directions I didn't even know existed — not because the facts were wrong, but because the path was curated without my awareness.
And here is the deeper concern: if I am not actively teaching him how to navigate competing goods, how to weigh the tension between two right answers, then the AI will quietly shape his value system by choosing which dilemmas to present and which to omit.
Parenting has indeed evolved from dispensing facts and answers toward cultivating some of our most delicate human assets:
We are no longer librarians. We are gardeners.
A gardener doesn't decide every branch that grows. They don't dictate every leaf's direction. Instead, they create the conditions under which good judgment can flourish. They tend the soil. They provide light and water. They prune when necessary. But ultimately, they trust the plant to grow toward the sun.
Our role is no longer to fill our children's minds. It is to cultivate their inner compass:
These are acts of judgment.

In the Age of AI, knowledge is abundant. Judgment is how we wield it.

That is what we must teach them. Not by giving them answers, but by walking with them through the tension. By showing them that wisdom is not about being certain — it is about being responsible in the face of uncertainty.
